The new Chapter 8 documentation is a weighty and fairly complex piece of literature published by the Department for Transport that deals with legal requirements for temporary situations and road works (under which all vehicles operating on highways fall) and is in two parts available from the Department for Transport website here (left-click to open / right-click to download):

We have also produced a summary and extracted the most pertinent parts relating to vehicle marking for easier guidance only; please ensure that if your vehicle(s) are involved in stopping or working on high speed roads that you purchase the full copy of the Traffic Signs Manual to fully acquaint yourselves with the specifications laid down for vehicles being used for this purpose.
